The ASPCA notes the darker the chocolate, the greater the risk, with baking chocolate and cocoa powder the most concentrated. A cat's small size means even a small amount can be a significant dose.

Can Cats Eat Chocolate?

No: toxic
No. Chocolate is toxic to cats as well as dogs. It contains theobromine and caffeine, which cats can't process well. Cats are less likely to eat it, but if yours did, especially dark or baking chocolate, call your vet.
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If your pet seems unwell, or you're worried, call your vet.
Why chocolate is dangerous for cats
If your cat ate some
- Call your vet, an emergency clinic or a pet poison line straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisonings are easier to treat before signs appear.
- In the US: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Both may charge a consultation fee.
- Note what was eaten, roughly how much and when, and keep the packaging.
- Don't make your pet vomit unless a vet tells you to; it isn't always safe.
- Use our chocolate calculator for a rough guide, and tell your vet the type and amount.
Signs to watch for
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Restlessness and hyperactivity
- A fast heart rate
- Tremors or seizures
Collapse, seizures, difficulty breathing or pale gums are emergencies: go to the nearest vet straight away.

Questions.
Do cats like chocolate?
Cats can't taste sweetness, so they're less interested than dogs, but they may lick chocolate spreads, cocoa or drinks.
