Cats are obligate carnivores with nutritional needs dogs don't share. Cornell Feline Health Center explains that cats need certain nutrients, including taurine, from animal tissue. A taurine deficiency can cause a serious heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy) and retinal degeneration. Cat food is formulated for these needs.

Best avoided
A few bites of dog food won't hurt a cat, but cats shouldn't eat it regularly. Dog food doesn't contain enough of the taurine, protein, vitamin A and arachidonic acid that cats need, and long-term it can cause heart disease and blindness.
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If your pet seems unwell, or you're worried, call your vet.
