Can Dogs Eat Macadamia Nuts?

Updated October 2026 · By the Hushku editorial team · 2 sources

No: toxic

No. Macadamia nuts can cause weakness (especially in the back legs), vomiting, tremors and fever in dogs, usually within 12 hours. Most dogs recover within one to two days, but call your vet, especially if the nuts were chocolate-coated.

This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. If your pet seems unwell, or you're worried, call your vet.

Why macadamia nuts are dangerous for dogs

The cause of macadamia nut poisoning isn't known, but the Merck Veterinary Manual reports signs in dogs after about 2.4 g of nuts per kg of body weight, which is just a few nuts for a small dog. The syndrome is usually not fatal and signs generally resolve within 12 to 48 hours. The bigger dangers are cookies and chocolates that combine macadamias with chocolate, raisins or xylitol, and the high fat content, which can trigger pancreatitis.

If your dog ate some

  • Call your vet, an emergency clinic or a pet poison line straight away, even if your pet seems fine. Many poisonings are easier to treat before signs appear.
  • In the US: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661. Both may charge a consultation fee.
  • Note what was eaten, roughly how much and when, and keep the packaging.
  • Don't make your pet vomit unless a vet tells you to; it isn't always safe.
  • Call your vet. If it was recent, they may make your dog vomit.
  • Check the packaging for chocolate, raisins or xylitol, which change the risk.

Questions.

Can a dog die from eating macadamia nuts?

Deaths are very rare and most dogs recover with supportive care, but treat it seriously, particularly if other toxic ingredients were involved.

Are other nuts toxic to dogs?

Most other nuts aren't toxic but are high in fat. Mouldy walnuts and other nuts can contain toxins that cause tremors.
