Fish is popular with cats, but diets high in fish can cause nutritional problems, and raw fish risks thiamine deficiency. Cooked salmon as an occasional treat is fine.
Yes, in moderation
Yes, cooked, plain and boneless salmon is a good treat for cats. Don't feed raw salmon (or other raw fish) regularly: it contains an enzyme that destroys thiamine, and can carry bacteria and parasites. Smoked salmon is too salty.

What you need to know
How to offer it safely
- Bake, poach or steam without seasoning.
- Remove all bones.
- Offer a small piece as a treat or topper.
Treats, including human food, should make up no more than about 10% of your cat's daily calories. Our calorie calculator shows your cat's daily needs. Introduce any new food slowly and stop if it causes vomiting or loose stools.
